for Piccolo and piano / para Flautin y piano

Venezuelan Rhapsody for Piccolo and Piano was commissioned by Maestro Regina Helcher Yost in 2023. Written in a rhapsodic style, the work unfolds in three contrasting sections distinguished primarily by their rhythmic and textural character. The opening section, Written in 5/8, draws on the rhythm of Venezuelan merengue, where modern harmonies intertwine with traditional elements to create a fresh and spontaneous musical dialogue. The middle section evokes the tonada llanera, with its plaintive character and melodies that suggest the solitary work of the llanero tending cattle on the plains. The final section is driven by the energy of the joropo, Venezuela’s quintessential dance, featuring its characteristic polyrhythms and the virtuosic spirit inherited from the expressive phrasing of the traditional arpa criolla.(Harp)

Rapsodia Venezolana para Piccolo y Piano fue comisionada por la maestra Regina Helcher Yost en 2023. La pieza está escrita de manera rapsódica incluyendo tres diferentes momentos reconocibles por sus elementos rítmicos y texturales principalmente. La sección inicial está escrita en 5/8, en ritmo de merengue Venezolano. Las armonías modernas se entretejen con las tradicionales creando una simbiosis fresca y espontanea. La sección intermedia se asemeja a una tonada llanera, con su tono lamentoso y sus melodías que evocan el trabajo del llanero en los corrales. La tercera y última parte está dominada por el Joropo, la danza venezolana por excelencia, con sus polirritmias características y su virtuosismo heredado de las frase del Arpa criolla.
