For Piccolo and Electronics
Three Timbral Bagatelles was born from my fascination with electronic music and the sonic experiments that emerged in the 20th century, when composers began incorporating electronic sounds of many kinds into their work. These explorations led to a powerful new aesthetic embraced by many composers. In these bagatelles, I sought to connect the sound of the piccolo with different digital textures, all within a fairly tonal and even traditional musical framework. Rhythms inspired by the Venezuelan joropo intertwine with synthesized sounds, while melodic laments reminiscent of the tonadas of the Venezuelan plains blend with the nocturnal insect sounds that fill the nights of Caracas. The first bagatelle has a strongly rhythmic character, with the piccolo performing highly technical and virtuosic lines over an Afro-rhythmic ostinato. The second bagatelle unfolds as a lyrical tonada set over a background evoking nocturnal crickets. The third and final bagatelle is dedicated to one of the great figures of Venezuelan academic music, Antonio Estévez. In this piece, I attempt to evoke elements close to his aesthetic as a tribute to his musical legacy.
